Gimli, the dwarf warrior from Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, appeared on Cook Islands bullion and collector issues as part of a licensed series following the commercial success of the Peter Jackson film trilogy — a franchise that generated over $2.9 billion at the box office and opened the door to decades of numismatic licensing agreements. Cook Islands has been one of the most prolific issuers of such themed legal tender, leveraging its currency arrangement with New Zealand to produce coins that are technically circulating currency but manufactured entirely for the collector market.
