Batenburg was a minor lordship wedged along the Maas in Gelderland, and its coinage rights — technically imperial in origin — were exercised with increasing audacity during the early years of the Dutch Revolt. Herman Diederik van Bronckhorst used the monetary chaos of 1577–1578 to strike silver well above what his jurisdiction could reasonably justify, a practice common among smaller lords who exploited the collapse of Habsburg mint supervision in the southern provinces.
The curved shield variety catalogued by Delmonte as S#552 is distinguished from the straight-shield emission by die construction alone — a detail that collapses the distinction between issues that are otherwise nearly identical in weight and fineness.
