Oscar I ascended the Swedish throne in 1844 and almost immediately initiated a review of the coinage system — this pattern is a direct product of that early-reign reassessment. The placement of the royal bust on the reverse rather than the obverse was unconventional for Swedish practice and likely explains why the design was rejected; official production coinage of the period followed the established obverse-bust convention without exception.
SM#145 is known in extremely limited numbers, as patterns of this type were produced solely for internal review at the Stockholm mint.
