The souvenir zero euro note series began in 2015 under a licensing arrangement with the European Central Bank, which permits the production of legal-denomination-styled collectibles provided they carry a face value that removes them from any obligation as circulating currency. Oberthur Fiduciaire prints these to the same security specifications as genuine euro banknotes — same paper, same intaglio printing — which is precisely the point: the tactile experience of a real note at a fraction of the cost, sold at tourist sites rather than issued through banks.
Blois château is one of the more frequently revisited subjects in the series, with multiple design variants issued across different years, making version-tracking a minor discipline in itself.
