Maroneia's coinage of this period reflects the city's precarious position on the Thracian coast during the prolonged instability following the Peloponnesian War. The city had changed hands repeatedly — Athenian, Spartan, and Thracian pressures all bearing down on its wine-producing economy simultaneously. Small bronze issues like this one were struck for local retail trade, a function the silver coinage of the region was too valuable to serve.
