| Reverse description | A bunch of grapes pendant from a vine branch with curling tendrils, depicted in high relief with individually rendered berries, centrally positioned in the field. Above the cluster, a gently curved vine stem with a leaf extends across the upper field. The partial ethnic legend Ρ Ω flanks the grape cluster in the lower field to left and right respectively, forming part of the abbreviated civic name ΜΑΡΩ(ΝΕITΩΝ). |

Maroneia's coinage of this period reflects the city's precarious position on the Thracian coast during the prolonged instability following the Peloponnesian War. The city had changed hands repeatedly — Athenian, Spartan, and Thracian pressures all bearing down on its wine-producing economy simultaneously. Small bronze issues like this one were struck for local retail trade, a function the silver coinage of the region was too valuable to serve.
